Bezoek aan een bijzonder familiaal Domein

Met 25 leden van ons Vinoforum Dijleland brachten we in het Pinkster-weekend van 2004 (29-31 mei) een bezoek aan één van de bekendste wijnstreken ter wereld: de Bourgogne. Bekend, maar eigenlijk relatief klein, want zich uitstrekkend van Marsannay in het Noorden tot een eindje bezuiden Mâcon of het Noorden van de Beaujolais. Het meest bekende gedeelte daarvan is wel de Côte de Nuits.

De reis was zeer zorgvuldig voorbereid door twee bestuursleden: Jan De Vriendt (reis- leider) en Jo Vandendriessche. In totaal stonden 9 wijnhuizen of wijn-boeren op het programma. En zowat 45 wijnen sierden de proeflijst. Een hele hap dus!

Na het Château de Marsannay - bezochten we het gereputeerde en achteraf als "bijzonder" te kwalificeren wijngoed: Rapet Père et Fils

Eerste indruk: mooi huis, onduidelijke toegang, en, na kloppen op de garagedeur, het bericht "attendez s'il vous plaît". Toen kwam een man (zie foto hiernaast) met pet en in werkkledij naar buiten, en wij dachten: dit is één van de twee zonen, diegene die Jan en Jo bij hun bezoek in november niet te zien kregen. Eens buiten wees de man ons de weg naar "la nouvelle cuverie", die naast het huis lag. We wezen op de mooie zwaar hellende wijngaard er vlak tegenover, en hij zei "mais c'est une partie de Corton Charlemagne" (zie achtergrondbeeld). Binnenin kregen we bondige uitleg bij de nieuwe cuves in beton (!), en werden we in de wijnkelder geleid: mooie nieuwe vaten, netjes geordend, en met speciale vinyl stoppen "voor de hygiëne". Frans kon niet nalaten er even aan te gaan snuffelen:

Intussen kwam een groep Franse bezoekers toe, ze fluisterden de man wat in het oor, en hij zei "venez tantôt". We zouden kort daarop begrijpen wat dit betekende.

Na dit - mij overbodig lijkende - cuveriebezoek trokken we weer naar het ouderlijke huis. We moesten een hele tijd wachten eer de man terug keerde - hij had intussen zijn Franse gasten onderhouden. Via de garage ging het dan naar de donkere en eerlijk gezegd weining verzorgde proefkelder (zie foto hiernaast). De Franse groep volgde ons. Onze gastheer bleek een man van (heel) weinig woorden - en, op mijn vraag of hij de zoon was - zei hij "ik werk hier".... De proeverij werd een koude bedoening: hij schonk de fles uit (één fles voor 24 personen), en verdween dan naar zijn Franse gasten. Hij luisterde kort naar onze commentaar, schonk een nieuwe wijn, en verdween dan weer. Op onze vraag of we geen wijnen van 2002 konden proeven zei hij: " die zijn nog niet gebotteld". IJverige speurneuzen ontdekten vervolgens in een nevenlokaal een hele stapel 2002... En toch was wat in het glas kwam goed tot heel goed - zoals onze proefnotities hieronder aangeven. Onze secretaris stelde op het einde bij de man enige ergernis vast - wellicht omdat we niets kochten - en na betaling van het geld voor de proeverij, kreeg de man de boodschap "dat hij weinig gezegd had, en niet eens bij ons was gebleven". Waarop hij: "U hebt ook geen vragen gesteld...." Een bezoek om snel te vergeten - tot ontgoocheling van onze reisleiders, die hier heel veel van verwacht hadden. Ooit zei me een wijnschrijver, die vaak Bourgondië bezoekt: "je hebt maar twee stijlen van ontvangst: de koele afstandelijke en de warme communicatieve"....Het beste deel is wat we hieronder in de proefnotities schrijven

Visiting a particular family Domain

On the Whitsun weekend of 2004, 25 members of our wine tasting guild went to visit one of the major wine regions of the world: Burgundy. Well known, of course, yet rather small: stretching out over small corridors from Marsannay to the North of Beaujolais.

The best known part of Burgundy is the Côte de Nuits, around the town of Nuits St. Georges, where we stayed in the IBIS hotel.

The trip had been meticulously prepared by two board members: Jan De Vriendt and Jo Vandendriessche - the former being our main organizer and trip leader. We planned to visit 9 domains or winegrowers and to taste a total of 45 wines. Quite a program indeed!

After our first visit to Chateau de Marsannay (see other report), wed went to the village of Pernand-Vergelesses, and more specifically to the Rapet winery. (see picture to the left).

First impression: nice house, well kept and neat. Curious reception, however: we had to knock on the garage door, and when it was opened, a man said in a wry tone: "Wait please". Then he came out, dressed in work dress and fitting hat, and told us that we would first visit "the new cuverie". This was situated next to the paternal house. Opposite was a steep inclining vineyard. We asked what that was, and he said "But that is Corton Charlemagne, or at least part of it".

In the neat cuverie, we were shown the new cement casks (!), with a lot of proud explanation. Then he lead us to the "caveau", where new wooden casks were aligned neatly, and pointed to the vinyl plugs "which we use for hygienic reasons. Our member Frans - always curious - could not refrain from opening one, and smelling: "friends, this is quite a promise"! (picture to the left). In the meantime, a group of French visitors came in, and whispered something in the man's ear. He said: "I'll be with you in a minute". We would soon know what that meant.

We then went back to the house, and had to wait quite a while before the man came back: he had served his French visitors. We went through the garage, and down into the quite dark and not too well kept cellars, where tastings take place. This is a picture of the event:

The man appeared to be a man of very few words: "Welcome, and let's taste". He then poured wine into the glasses (one bottle for 24 people!), gave almost no explanation, let us taste, dissappeared back to his countrymen, came back, listened to our comments, and poured a new wine. Upon my question whether he was one of the two sons - our trip leaders had met one back in November on their preparatory visit, but did not recognize our host - he simply said:"I work here".... And off he went, to his French group where he was quite more talkative.

We also asked whether it would be possible to taste wines of 2002. He simply replied: "these have not been bottled yet". However, a few of our fine explorers found a whole lot of 2002 bottles in an adjacent room. In short: this was a visit soon to be forgotten.

No wonder that - although the wines appeared to be good-to-very-good - not a single bottle was bought here. That seemed to irritate the man, who, upon a remark of our secretary, said: " I did not say much because you did not ask questions...."

A well-known winewriter, who has visited Burgundy often enough to be knowledgeable - once told me: in Burgundy you have two reception styles: cool and distanced, or warm and colloquial.

both slightly floral and fruity flavour

In de mond:
mollig in de aanzet, met veel fruit maar ook goede aciditeit; mooi geïntegreerde lange afdronk
In the mouth:
smooth onset, fresh and fruity; nicely integrated failry long finish

Conclusie
een frisfruitige én elegante witte Pernand, met nog een mooie toekomst. Ook voor 1r Cru betaal je flink

a fresh and fruity, quite elegant white Pernand with still promises for the near future

helder bleekgeel
To the eye:
clear pale yellow

Aan de neus:
eerder gesloten, dan vooral kruidige en getoaste terroirimpressies
At the nose:
closed at first, then mainly spicy and smokey terroir impressions

In de mond:
enerzijds fruitige, en later, een aparte kruidige smaak; de lange afdronk kan een zekere verbrokkeling niet verbergen
In the mouth:
on the one hand, and at the start, quite fruity - but then a spicy palate takes over; the long finish cannot undo an impression of lack of integration

Conclusie
een wijn met twee gezichten: fruitig eerst, veeleer kruidig daarna. Misschien wachten op integratie?

Conclusion
a wine with two faces: fruity at first, far more spicy further on - should we wait for integration?

Drink bij:
goed bij soliede vissoorten, gevogelte met broccoli
Drink with:
solid fish, fowl with green vegetables like broccoli or coleslaw

Aan de neus:
complexe neus van zachte eik, terroir, witte bloemen en honig
At the nose:
complex nose of soft oak, terroir, white flowers and honey

In de mond:
even complex smaakpatroon met fruit, frisse aciditeit, houttoets, en zelfs minerale tonen in de lange mooi geïntegreerde frisse afdronk
In the mouth:
equally complex palate, with lots of fruit, fresh acidity, a touch of vanilla and wood, and even mineral tones in the long well-integrated fresh finish

Een Corton Charlemagne met alles erop en eraan: beklijvende klasse

Drink bij:
Kan voor veel doeleinden dienen: aperitief, begeleider van koud buffet, schaaldieren, bouillabaise, zachte Brie

tussen kers en granaat
To the eye:
between cherry and pomegrenade

Aan de neus:
vooral terroirimpressies: bosgrond, kreupelhout, boskruiden
At the nose:
mainly woodland impressions, woody spices, undergrowth

In de mond:
verrassend fruitige aanzet, daarna komen de verwachte kruidige tonen naar boven, onderbouwd door frisse zuren, en met opnieuw een mooi bittertje in de vrij lange afdronk
In the mouth:
suprisingly fruity onset, but soon the spicy tones become dominant, with fresh acidity underneath, and a nice bitter touch int he fairly long finish

Conclusie
een karaktervolle vlezige terroirwijn, met nog 4-5 jaar evolutiemogelijkheid

Conclusion
a zesty terroir wine, will get better in the next 4-5 years

Zoals sommigen zegden: eetwijn voor bij hazerug, fazant, hert, gemarineerd everzwijn
Drink with:

redelijk geconcentreerd kersenrood
To the eye:
fairly concentrated cherry

Aan de neus:
eerst gesloten, dan een waaier aan klein rood fruit (aalbes, braambes, bosaardbei), hout en bosgrond
At the nose:
closed at first, then a panoply of small red fruit flavours (red currant, blackberry, strawberry from the wood), wood and woodland

In de mond:
vrij krachtige en kruidige aanzet, tanninerijk, veel body, krachtige lange afdronk - mist een beetje de fijnfruitigheid van de neus
In the mouth:
rather powerful and spicy onset, quite some tannins, meaty long finish - lacks somewhat the fine fruitiness of the nose

Conclusie
een Corton met twee gezichten: eerder fijnfruitige en frisse neus, vlezig en krachtig in de mond

Conclusion
a Corton with tow faces: rather elegant fruit in the nose, meaty and spicy in the mouth

gegrild rood vlees, halfharde of licht blauw geaderde kazen
Drink with:
grilled red meat, semi-hard cheeses, blue cheeses
