What we have been saying, with many others, in the past five years, has now been entirely confirmed by a systematic survey with 4.000 Belgian consumers, asked about their wine preferences in 2009. Look at the graph above, analysing 80% of wine consumption in 09: Bordeaux is in the lead, but Chile is on its heels! And in the Flemish North, Chile clearly surpasses Bordeaux! Market research bureau GfK also gives global statistics over the last five years: "In 2004, 71% of all wine sold in Belgium was French. Five years later, that percentage has dropped to 58% in Belgium, and even to 50% in Flanders. New World wines (Australia, South-Africa, Chile) and other European wines conquer an ever larger part of the cake. Most remarkable is the evolution with red Bordeaux! Possible explanations for the evolution are a greater and more diversified offer, greater exposure and a good price-quality relationship" A second finding: North and South in Belgium

Lets look also at the sonsumption of There is more to tell here: in our recent blind tasting of 20 well known champagnes versus 12 Cava's, we came to the conclusion that they were equal in quality. And our top three contained two Cava's, at half the price! What about the economic crisis? Well, Belgians drink as much - or even a little bit more - wine as before. But, they now keep a close eye on the price-quality relationship!
