Georgische wijn? Voor de meesten van ons een nobele onbekende. Sommigen onder ons weten nog dat Georgië "het oudste wijnland ter wereld is", en brengen dit in verband met archeologische opgravingen die in het Oosten van Georgië plaats vonden.

En verder is er natuurlijk de recente politieke geschiedenis, en het conflict met Osetië binnen de grenzen, en de vroegere Russiche baas daarbuiten.

Wie echter op Megavino is geweest heeft misschien wel - en dat voor het eerst - een stand met Georgische wijnen aangetroffen. Dat deden enkele bestuursleden van ons Vinoforum Dijleland, en dat deden we zelf ook. En de ervaring was dubbel: "merkwaardige onbekende druiven, met soms moeilijk uit te spreken namen en nooit eerder geproefde smaken" enerzijds, en "toch wel af en toe grote kwaliteit"!

Toen de gelegenheid zich plots voordeed werd contact opgenomen met een dame van Georgische afkomst, Managadze Gulie, die Georgische wijnen invoert. (zie foto) Dat doet ze wel als "nevenberoep", want deze dame fungeert als tolk bij o.a. de Europese Gemeenschap. Maar wijn is voor haar, en haar familie, een passie. Ze heeft al eerder proeverijen gehouden, o.m. voor de gilde "In den Bloeienden Wijngaert" uit Lier, en commentaren die we daarover konden lezen waren verrassend positief.

Onze "Georgische avond" werd door mevr. Gulie kort ingeleid, waarna we een film te zien kregen over de eeuwenoude wijngeschiedenis van Georgië - teruggaand tot de 6e E v. C. - want er werden zowel oude amforen als druivenpitten uit die tijd gevonden.

In de Ikalto-academie, gesticht in de 9de eeuw, kon men studeren aan de wijnbouwfaculteit! Eeuwenlang was de wijnbouw de belangrijkste landbouwactiviteit in Georgië. De Georgische wijnbouw vierde zijn hoogtepunt in de tweede helft van de 19de eeuw, onder impuls van de vorst en dichter Tsjavtsjavadze. In de Sovjettijd was Georgië dé wijnleverancier, vooral dan van schuimwijn en halfzoete witte wijn. Sedert de politieke onafhankelijkheid heeft Poetin een ban uitgesproken over Georgische wijn - die daarmee eerst klappen kreeg. Sedert een tiental jaar heeft het zich op het Westen gericht, en zijn hele aanpak van wijn verbouwen gemoderniseerd. Er zijn nu vijf grote wijnbedrijven in het land, vaak ook gesteund door Westers kapitaal. Het belangrijkste daarvan is volgens velen Teliani Valley.

Het potentieel is enorm: het land heeft ca 500 eigen druivenrassen, heeft nu ook Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay en Riesling ingevoerd, en heeft enkele "toprassen" zoals de rode Saperavi (= "inkt"), en de witte Tsolikouri en Rkatsiteli. En er zijn vijf grote wijngebieden, met Kakheti en Imereti als meest in het oog springend.

Hoe dan ook, het werd een boeiende proefavond, met een drietal echt grote wijnen, afkomstig van Kakheti en Imereti, die in prijs-kwaliteit zeer de moeite waard zijn.

Wines from Georgia? "That's history" is what most wine lovers from the West might say. Because they know that archeologists have discovered grape kernels in jars that have been carbon-dated around 6000 B.C.

And yes, recently, Georgia was much in the news with the conflicts with Osetians first, and then with the big Russian armoured neighbour afterwards.

Some of you may know the Megavino wine fair, which took place for the 10th time in Brussels last October. For the first time, visitors could taste wines from Georgia there in a tiny stand with good visibility.

Members of the board of our wine tasting society did go and taste some of these wines, and their reaction was twofold: "remarkable unknown grapes, not only with names that we can hardly pronounce well but also with tastes that are strange to our 'western' palate; yet some wines do show great qualities!"

They therefore organized a tasting with a lady from Georgia, living now in Belgium, listenng to the name of Managadze Gulie. She is a professional translator to the EU, but at the same time an ambassador of Georgian wines, which she imports and sells to the Georgian community here and to wine lovers who have discovered their quality.

On that November evening of 2008, we first got a brief introduction by Mrs. Gulie,, soon followed by a film which told us the ancient history of wine making in Georgia. What the film did not say was that around 900, there was an Ikalto-academy in Georgia, where young people could study at the faculty of viticulture! Wine making has been the most important agricultural activity in the country for ages, reaching its apogee in the 19th century.

In Soviet times, Georgia was one of the most important wine exporters to Russia - with both sparkling and semi-sweet white wines. Come the "transition" of 1990, and the tensions bewteen Georgia and Russia, especially around 1997, president Poetin slapped a ban on all Georgian wine imports.

That was initially a big problem, but, with the help of European oenoligists and Western capital, a new wine industry arose. Nowadays, there are five great modern wineries in the country, with Teliani Valley being possibly the most important.

Geogria has an enormous potential for making good wines. It has some 500 autochtonous grape varieties, and it has also imported Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Riesling. Its top varieties are Saperavi in red, and Tsolikouri and Rkatsiteli in white. As our map above shows, there are 5 major wine regions, with Kakheti and Imereti as the most important.

Our tasting was all in all a big success: after initial hesitation, we discovered truly qualitative and even great white and especially red wines. And with a good price-quality relationship.
