INTANGIBLE BUSINESS proclaims E.J. GALLO WINERY as strongest BRAND in the WORLD
Een Amerikaans consultancy bureau dat luistert
naar de merkwaardige naam "Intangible Business" - "onaantastbaar dus"
doet vooral aan "merkenevaluatie". In andere woorden: de kracht en de marktwaarde van een bepaald merk bepalen.
Dat doen ze ook in de sector van "Spirits and Wines".
In 2008 werden zo niet minder dan 10.000 merknamen onder de loep genomen. Een expertenpanel geeft scores voor bekendheid, appreciatie door consumenten, opbrengst voor de eigenaar, enzovoort. Uiteindelijk wordt een "Top 100" opgemaakt.
Vandaar de titel van het rapport: "Power 100 2008". Wat ons hierin interesseerde was de Top 10 voor de schuimwijnen-champagnes en voor de zogenaamde "light wines".
Voor "sparkling wines" geen verrassing: 8/10 zijn champagnes, te beginnen met twee verwachte namen: Moët et Chandon en Veuve Cliquot, allebei met zware PR-machines en reclame achter zich.
Ietwat verrassend: de derde plaats van het Catalaanse Freixenet. En verder de bekende namen (zie lijst hiernaast). Leuk is de 9e plaats van de coöperatieve Nicolas Feuillate. Als het op kwaliteit aan komt zou onze eigen lijst er heel anders uitzien, met in de top zeker Bollinger, Krug, Louis Roederer, Charles Heidsieck en Vrancken-Pommery.
Voor de wijnen valt eigenlijk vooral op dat geen enkel Frans huis bij de top 10 staat! Wel vinden we het al vaak door ons geproefde E.J. Gallo: dit huis, weliswaar nu opgesplitist in twee bedrijvenen vanwege familieruzie - koppelt naambekendheid en marktwaarde aan kwalitiet! Verder een aantal namen die we ook in onze databank hebben staan: Concha y Toro, Jacobs Creek, Robert Mondavi, Blossom Hilli en Lindemans. Ons niet vanuit het proefglas bekend zijn Beringer, Sutter en Yellowtail.

Evaluating Brands through careful analysis of the opinion of consumers and experts is the main mission of the American firm "Intangible Business".
It has valued and advised some of the world’s biggest brands from a management, legal and financial point of view.
One of their sectors is "spirits and wine brands". The "Power 100 2008" is the third annual report pinpointing the most powerful spirits and wine brands in the world. The organisation says it uses a robust methodology which takes into account the consumer’s perception of brand strength and its financial performance. A panel of leading international drinks experts are asked to score each brand on a variety of measures and these scores are combined with hard volume data to create a league table of the most powerful international drinks brands in the world.
The Top 10 sparkling list brings no surprise: Moët en Chandon and Veuve Clicquot are Nrs 1 and 2. They have a heavy PR and marketing machine behind them. More surprising is the third place for Catalan Freixenet - but they too are marketing champions. When it comes to quality, our own Top 10 would be quite different, with certainly Bollinger, Krug, Louis Roederer, Charles Heidsieck and Vrancken-Pommery.
As to wines, the most striking conclusion is that no French brand is present in the Top 10. And who is Nr 1? Yes, good old E.J. Gallo (though recently broken up in two clans). We have been following them for about 10 years, and here brand value and quality go hand in hand.
In the list (see to the left) we find Concha y Toro, Jacobs Creek, Robert Mondavi, Blossom Hill and Lindemans, well-known to us and to be found in our database. From a taxting point of view, we are not familiar with Beringer, Sutter en Yellowtail. We honour Gallo by presenting a number of recent tasting notes!

To the eye: concentrated purplish ruby, nice mirror, solid legs

veel donkere pruim, cassis en bosbes, peper, granietsteen, bosgrond, en, na walsen, weer dominant pruim en cassis At the nose:
lots of dark red fruit (plums, cassis, blueberry), then also pepper, granite, woodland, and, after shaking, cassis comes back again

Conclusie
Volfruitige en licht kruidige maar ook frisse Zinfandel: symfonie van geuren en smaken met cassis als de concertmeester.

Quite full fruity, lightly spicy yet also fresh Zin: a symphony of flavours with cassis as the concert master.

een klasrijke Chardonnay, van het romig-fruitige en tegelijk friszurige type. Kan nog 3 jaar mee.

het volronde en zachtfruitige en toch voldoende soliede type van Cabernet: zon te koop. Sedert de vernieuwing halfweg de jaren '90 is Gallo er sterk op vooruit gegaan! Grens A+/AA
