                PROEVERIJ-TASTING PECH CELEYRAN 30-01-04

 Our tasters' club Dijleland (river flowing through Leuven) received the owner of Chateau Pech Céleyran - Nicolas de St. Exupéry - indeed a far descendent  of famous Antoine, author of The Little Prince. We therefore combined wines with text fragments from the famous book, and projected drawings (see below). Both the wines and the texts were to the high tastes of our members!

Met ons Vinoforum Dijleland hielden we op de laatste vrijdag van januari 2004 een proeverij van het wijnaanbod van Pech-Céleyran uit de Languedoc-Roussillon. Ziehier de uitnodiging die we verstuurden:

Waarde leden van ons Vinoforum: 

Onze volgende proeverij wordt een bijzondere avond: enerzijds maken we kennis met het wijnaanbod van Pech-Celeyran en de toekomstige eigenaar, en anderzijds leggen we de band met grootoom Antoine de St. Exupéry, auteur van “Le Petit Prince” en “Vol de Nuits”. Het wijngoed, of beter het kasteel ligt in de Languedoc:

 

Pech-Céleyran omvat 140 ha, waarvan 96 ha wijngaarden. Het witte en rode gamma kan gegroepeerd worden in twee appellaties: Côteaux du Languedoc – La Clape en Vin de Pays des Côtes de Pérignan. Er worden vooral monocépages gemaakt. Voor zijn rode “La Clape ‘98” kreeg het twee sterren in de Guide Hachette.

 

In totaal proeven we acht wijnen, vier witte waaronder een Viognier en twee Chardonnays, en vier rode, waaronder een Pinot Noir, een Syrah en een Mourvèdre uit de jaren 98-2001. Het geheel wordt omlijst met tekstfragmenten uit De Kleine Prins, voorgedragen door Annie Van Avermaet – die zoiets eerder en met brio deed op onze Zuidafrika-avond. De proeverij zelf wordt geleid door Herman Vermoesen (remember o.m. Chateau Siran!). Bovendien is er nog een verrassing voorzien…

De proeverij verliep geheel volgens het afgesproken plan. Bijzonder gewaardeerd werden de fragmenten voorgelezen door Annie uit DE KLEINE PRINS. We werden - net als de beroemde vos - "tam" of "apprivoisé", wat wil zeggen tot "communitas" gemaakt. We toonden tegelijk tekeningen, zoals deze van de prins en de vos:

Onze gastheren, Herman Vermoesen en Nicolas de St. Exupéry, gaven duidelijke uitleg bij streek, druiven en productiewijze, en wij proefden in totaal 8 wijnen. CHATEAU LA CLAPE PECH CELEYRAN BLANC 2002 - France - Côtes du Languedoc, La Clape
2002
 Voor het oog:
helder strogeel, gewone concentratie
To the eye:
clear pale straw, nice mirror
 Aan de neus:
eerst gesloten, daarna komt een gemengd neusje van fruit, groenten (artisjok) en kruiden, plus ook honig
At the nose:
closed at first, after shaking a light but mixed aroma of fruit, honey, spices and vegetables (artichoque) comes up
 In de mond:
aanvankelijk overheerst het kruidig-groene patroon, daarna komt meer het fruit op de voorgrond, met toch weer kruidigheid in de vrij korte afdronk
In the mouth:
spicy-veggy pattern at the onset, fruit on mid-palate, and then spices again in the short finish
Conclusie
een fruitig-kruidige zomerwijn die wat frisse zuren mist		   Conclusion
a fruity-spicy summer wine which lacks a bit of acidity

CHÂTEAU PECH CELEYRAN VIOGNIER 2001 - France - Côteaux du Languedoc, Vérignan
2001
 Voor het oog:
tussen stro- en citroengeel, helder, traant matig
To the eye:
between pale straw and lemon, clear, semi-long legs
 Aan de neus:
aanvankelijk gesloten, een gemengde neus van kruiden, boter en mango
At the nose:
closed at the onset, then a mixed pattern of spices (garrigue), cream and mango emerges
 In de mond:
heel fruitig en gevuld met een mooi bittertje in de halflange afdronk. Een rusitiek karakter, met iets te weining zuren
In the mouth:
very fruity and well-filled, with a nice bitter touch in the semi-long finish. A bit heavy, lacks acidity
Conclusie
een rustieke fruitige Viognier om binnen het jaar te drinken. Merk wel: "rustiek" is geen denigrerende term		   Conclusion

To the eye:
clear pale straw, greenish reflection
 Aan de neus:
een mooie Chardonnayneus met nootjes en lichte rokerigheid, ook licht boterig
At the nose:
a nice Chardonnay nose, a bit smoky and creamy
 In de mond:
frisfruitige aanzet, het fruit zit mooi geïntegreerd in een bitterzurig kleedje. Halflange afdronk
In the mouth:
fresh fruity onset; the fruit is embedded in a light cloak of acid and bitter; pleasant semi-long finish
Conclusie
een correcte friszurige Chardonnay - smaakt naar meer! Mooie prijs-kwaliteitverhouding		   Conclusion

 Voor het oog:
helder goudgeel, duidelijke visocositeit
To the eye:
clear gold, has legs!
 Aan de neus:
aangename eikig-romige neus met ook exotisch fruit: typisch voor de cépage; eik is wel stevig present
At the nose:
pleasant oaky-creamy nose with a touch of mango - typical for the grape. Yet, further on, oak appears to be quite present
 In de mond:
eerst romig-fruitige aanzet met goeie zuren, daarna echter neemt de eik het commando over tot in de vrij lange afdronk toe
In the mouth:
first creamy-fruity onset with good acid; but then the oak takes the lead through the fairly long solid finish
Conclusie
een Chardonnay met twee gezichten: diepfruitig en romig aroma dat ook eerst zo doorsmaakt, daarna overheerst de eik		   Conclusion
a two-faced chardonnay: deep exotic fruit plus cream in the nose and at first in the mouth, then the oak takes over

fruitig aperitief, ongetijwfeld ook goed bij zurige fruittaarten (als contrast) of leverpastei
Drink with:
fruity aperitif, also sour fruit cakes and liver pastry

1998
 Voor het oog:
tussen kersen- en robijnrood, nog jonge kleur
To the eye:
between cherry and ruby, still young
 Aan de neus:
een neus van kruiden (thijm), terroir en zwarte kers plus zoethout
At the nose:
a mixed nose of spices (thyme), woodland, black cherry and liquorice
 In de mond:
krachtige en vlezige aanzet, een beetje stroef, en met nog flink wat tannines in de lange afdronk. Heeft tijd nodig
In the mouth:
powerful and meaty onset, somewhat harsh, and still quite tannic up to the long finish. Needs time
Conclusie
van de kruidig-fruitige complexe neus blijkt voorlopig vooral de kruidigheid door te smaken; na 1 uur kwam er wat meer fruit door, maar bleef ook het tanninekarakter. Zeker decanteren! We geven hem voordeel van de twijfel		   Conclusion
the mix of fruit and spices does not quite hold in the tannic and meaty mouth - though after 1 hour some fruit came back with still a lot of tannin. DECANT!

CHÂTEAU PECH CELEYRAN PINOT NOIR 2000 - France - Côteaux du Languedoc, Vérignan
2000
 Voor het oog:
matig geconetreerde donkere kersenkleur
To the eye:
moderately concentrated dark cherry
 Aan de neus:
lichte mufheid in de aanzet, daarna vooral terroir en klein bosfruit
At the nose:
slightly dusty at the onset, then mainly terroir (clay soil) and small fruit of the bushes
 In de mond:
een mooie frisfruitige aanzet met een kruidig midden en een redelijk lange goed geïntegreerde afdronk die wel tikkeltje uitdrogend is
In the mouth:
mellow fresh fruity onset, in mid-palate more spicy, and a fairly long well-integrated finish, a little drying out.
Conclusie
een beklijvende mediterrane Pinot Noir waarin kruidigheid en terroir de bovenhand hebben - anders dan de Bourgognewijnen		   Conclusion
a mediterranean Pinit Noit with high soil and underwood expression - differs quite from general Burgundy style

deze wijn bleek zelfs goed te harmoniëren met een wildschotel met kampernoelies en knolselderpuree

To the eye:
concentrated ruby, still young and with long legs
 Aan de neus:
een gemengde neus van leder (animale toets), donkere kers, chocolade - kortom echt Syrah
At the nose:
a mixed nose of leather (animal touch), dark cherry, chwolate - in short: true Syrah
 In de mond:
mooie diepfruitige aanzet, spoedig aangevuld met kruiden en zachte tannines, alles goed geïntegreerd in de lange afdronk
In the mouth:
nice deepfruity onset, in mid-palate more meaty and powerful, with solid but non-agressive tannins in the long finish
Conclusie
een volmondige mediterrane Syrah met nog flink bewaarpotentieel. Mooie prijs-kwaliteitverhouding		   Conclusion

 Aan de neus:
de typische kruidigheid van mourvèdre: kruidnagel, garrigue, donker zuurdesembrood, maar ook wat rood fruit
At the nose:
the typical spiciness of mourvèdre: clove, spicy dry underwood, dark sourbread, but also dark red fruit
 In de mond:
merkwaardig smaakpatroon: kruidigheid alsom, ook licht rokerig, onderbouw door frisse zuren en een fruittoets in de vrij lange afdronk
In the mouth:
remarkable taste pattern: spiciness throughout, but then also smoky touch in mid-palate plus light red fruit in the fairly long finish
Conclusie
een mooi getypeerde Mouvèdre - unieke kans om dit te proeven!		   Conclusion

 Drink bij:
We dronken hem bij hertekalfsgebraad met knolserpuree en oesterzam: heerlijk. Ook goed bij halfharde kazen en kruidige stoofschotels
Drink with:
we had it with steak of deer with sellery and mushrooms plus apple: very good! Als good with semi-hard cheeses and spicy stews
