Het domein Albert Mann ligt in Wettolsheim vlakbij Ingersheim-Colmar, dus in het hartje van de Elzas. Het is één van de oudste familiedomeinen uit de Elzas, opgericht in 1654. Thans wordt het geleid door de twee broers Barthélémy - Maurice (de man helemaal links op de foto) en Jacky, op hun beurt afstammend van een traditerijke wijnbouwersfamilie. jacky staat in de voor de wijngaard, terwijl Maurice wijnmaker én - niet te vergeten - vlotte en humoristische PR-man is.

De wijngaarden zijn verdeeld over 8 gemeenten, met een totaal van 21 ha. Nagenoeg de hele variatie aan bodems vind je hier terug:van kiezel- en klei, over graniet en vulkanische lösgrond tot mergel- en kalk. Onmiddellijk werd ons duidelijk gemaakt dat biologische principes hier hoog in het vaandel staan. Twee variante uitdrukkingen maakten ons dat duidelijk: "le vin est la mémoire du sol" en "... du raisin".

Bij Albert Mann vinden we het hele gamma druivenrassen van de Elzas terug: Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir en Muscat. Het domein heeft ook 6 ha Grand Cru wijngaarden in de gebieden Hengst, Schlossberg, Fürstentum, Steingrubler en Pfersigberg.

Hier proefden we in totaal 8 wijnen.
Meest in het oog springend waren voor ons de Pinot Noirs waarmee ook de proeverij begon: kersen- tot robijnkleurig, geconcentreerd, rijk aromatisch en met veel body. Tenslotte moeten we wel opmerken dat de prijzen hier (redelijk) hoog liggen. Maar geen nood: Albert Mann voert naar bijna 20 landen uit, en vaart daar wel bij.

We presenteren hieronder een selectie van 6 goede tot zeer goede wijnen.

Domain Albert Mann bears the name of its ancestral founders back in 1654, but right now, it is lead by the inheritants of another ancient vintagers family: Barthélémy. We were welcomed by the winemaker and notable PR man Maurice: eloquent, humouristic yet also serious about the "mission" of the house: to produce wines that are - in his words - "the memory of the soil". That means that biological principles are applied here, although modern technology is used as well.

The vineyards cover a total of 21 ha, yet are spread over 8 villages. That implies that nearly the whole wide range of Alsacian soil types is represented: from slate to lime, from granite to vulcanic löss, from marl to chalk.

Moreover, the whole range of Alsace cépages is produced here: Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir and Muscat. Nearly one third of the vineyards ( ca 6 ha) are situated in Great Growth zones: Hengst, Schlossberg, Furstentum, Steingrubler and Pfersigberg.

We tasted 8 wines, starting with two Pinot Noir wines, and they were the best in their kind: concentrated cherry-to-ruby, wealthy nose, lots of matter, good ageing potential.

On the other hand, prices are - relatively speaking - rather high. But that is no problem for the house: they successfully export wines to nearly 20 countries.

DOMAINE ALBERT MANN RIESLING GRAND CRU SCHLOSSBERG 2008 - France - Alsace

helder citroengeel, mooie spiegel
To the eye:
clear lemon, nice mirror
Aan de neus:
eerst gesloten, dan komen mineralen en vuursteen, daarna rijp wit fruit
At the nose:
closed at first, then minerals pop up followed by ripe white fruit
In de mond:
al wat je rook komt terug in de mond: rijp wit fruit, mineralen en rokerige toets, dit alles ingebed in frisse zuren; grote frisfruitige lengte
In the mouth:
what you smelled before comes back on the palate: ripe white fruit, minerals, a smoky touch, all of this packed in refined acid; great fresh fruity length
Conclusie
Nu al indrukwekkend met al wat een "graniet" Riesling bieden kan: fijn rijp fruit, mineralen, een vuursteentoets. Eigenlijk moet je met deze wijn nog 3-4 jaar wachten tot hij heel groot wordt. Prijzig		   Conclusion
Impressive right now, offering all that a "granite" Riesling can give: fine ripe fruit, minerals, flint. Yet, as with many 2008wines, one better waits 3_4 more years. Pricy

typisch PV-boeket: aardbei, rode bes en kers, plus een terroir toets en wat eik

typical PN: strawberry, redcurrant and cherry, plus terroir (woodland) and a light touch of oak

vrij krachtige mondvullende aanzet met het kleinrood fruit op een bedje van goede zuren en levendige tannines; vrij lange, licht prikkelende afdronk die ook licht uitdrogend is
In the mouth:
fairly powerful onset with the small red fruit on a bed of fine acid and lively tannin; fairly long finish with titillating acid and lsightly drying out
Conclusie
De lichte kleur laat niet vermoeden dat we in het glas een redelijk krachtige en goed gevulde PN krijgen. Eigenlijk kan je beter 2-3 jaar wachten. Wordt dan ook beter. Grens B+/A		   Conclusion

krachtig gestructureerde aanzet met zowel fruit als kruiden, mineralen, vanille en fijne zuren en nog flink wat niet-aggressieve tannines; lange frisfruitige én kruidige afdronk

powerfully strutued onset with both fruit, spices, minerals, vanilla and fine acid plu still solid yet non-aggressive tannin ; long fresh fruity and spicy finish
Conclusie
De enige echt klasrijke Pinot Noir die we ooit in de Elzas proefden: zowel kleinrood rijp fruit als fijne zuren, mineralen en doorsmakende tannines. Nu al drinkbaar, maar wordt pas over 3-4 jaar echt groot. Best decanteren. Mooi etiket! Prijzig		   Conclusion
The only high class Pinot Noir that we ever tasted in the Alscae: ripe small red fruit, very fine acid, minerals and tasty tannin. Will reach full potential in 3-4 years. Decant!
