Voor de vierde maal waren we bij de Wijngilde Wezemaal te gast voor een avondje wijnproeven. Thema dit keer: Amerikaanse, zeg maar Californische wijnen uit de supermarkt. Bij Wim en Anne "op zolder" brachten we eerst een presentatie (dit is de link). Daarna stelden we 7 wijnen voor, lieten ze proeven, en vooral door henzelf beoordelen.

We startten wel met de vraag: "wie van jullie heeft Amerikaanse wijn in de kelder, of drinkt regelmatig zulke wijn?". We waren niet verbaasd dat maar één van de zestien deelnemers positief antwoordde. Zoals uit de onderstaande notities én scores blijkt waren ze wel positief verrast. "Ik wist niet dat er voor die prijs zulke goede wijnen waren bij Uncle Sam". Noteer ook dat er maar één supermarkt meer is die een behoorlijk aanbod aan USA-wines heeft! We laten de kwestie van de oorza(a)k(en) hier even terzijde, betreuren alleen maar deze situatie..

We have been setting up a tasting of American wines from the supermarkets. Or we better use the singular here, because, there is only one supermarket in Belgium that has a more or less consisten offering of wines from the USA - as the tasting notes below will reveal.

In contrast to the limited offerings, we can note that the quality is good to high, and - given the actual Dollar-Euro relationship - for quite reasonable prices. The tasters were all members of a wine tasting association, and were used to make impartial judgments. They were positively surprised. Two judgments that we have made several times before are still valid: Belgium is not a fan of USA-wines, and the USA-wineworld does not seem to do much about it.
The fact alone that there are great Zinfandel wines around should be reason enough for an attempt to revert that situation.
