Sommige Bulgaarse nieuwkomers timmeren hard aan de weg, zoals we ooit zelf ter plaatse konden ervaren. De
voornaamste onder hen is Boyar estate, opgericht in 1990, en in '98
omgevormd tot Domaine Boyar (let op de Franse naam) met een sterke
buitenlandse, vooral Amerikaanse kapitaalinbreng. In dat jaar ook verwierf
Boyar twee andere grote coöperaties, en bouwde een heel nieuwe
installatie met de verst ontwikkelde Australische technologie in Sliven.
In 2000 werden bijna 3 miljoen flessen verkocht, in 2008 waren er dat ca 5 miljoen, waarvan 80% naar Europa (vooral
UK) en Japan zijn gegaan. Ook de Benelux behoort tot de sterke exportzones
- vooral via diverse warenhuizen zoals GB-Carrefour, Colruyt, Spar en
recentelijk ook Match en Champion. Zo'n spreiding is wel merkwaardig.
Even kende Boyar een dip zo rond 2006-7, maar ze zijn, na interne hervormingen, weer op niveau. Intussen is het assortiment in de warenhuizen wel beperkter geworden, zeker bij Colruyt en Carrefour
DOMAINE BOYAR BULGARIA
Bulgaria may still not be hot in Anglosaxon countries, with the exception of the UK. Since 1990 a lot has been going onin that old wine country. The main event was the founding of a huge "Domaine Boyar" (notice the French name), with the help of foreign, especially American capital. This also meant the takeover of 2 former coops, and the introduction of new techniques and technology, coming mainly from Australia - the wine world is globalized just like all the rest! They gained their first big success in the UK, with over 1 million bottles in 2000. They are now selling, after a dip around 2006, nearly 5 million bottles a year. And what is typical is this: no single supermarket has a monopoly here, you'll find them in several markets!
We tasted a set of recent wines, and the global result is positive, especially in view of the quality-price relationship!.
