Cava versus champagne? Met testaankoop deden we een blinde
vergelijkende proef: 20 champagnes uit surpermarkten met alle bekende grote namen en daartussendoor 10 cava's.

Slotsom (unaniem): qua kwaliteit is er nauwelijks verschil. Wel in prijs! Cava's variëren van 5 tot 12 Euro, Champagnes van 12 tot ... 33 Euro! Zie hieronder onze selectie, met toevoeging van twee rosé's.

CAVA'S worth basic champagnes

Cava worth champagne? For many a wine lover this is unheard of. The proof is in the ... tasting (blind, of course)

With consumers' organisation Testaankoop we tasted 20 champagnes intermixed with 10 cava's. Result: they are at the same fair to very good quality levels! Only big difference: the prices. The cava's from supermarkets were between 5 and 12 Euro. The champagnes also from supermarkets were between 12 and ... 33 Euro!

zeer helder bleekgeel met groene schijn, breed en fijn parelend
To the eye:
very clear pale yellow with greenish reflection, fine and broad bubble stream

Aan de neus:
aantrekkelijke neus met zowel florale (witt bloemen) als fruitige tonen (appel), met ook citrustoets, licht geparfumeerd ook
At the nose:
attractive nose with both gloral (white flowers) and fruity (apple) tones, plus touch of citrus,slightly perfumed

In de mond:
rijk mousserende fijnfruitige aanzet met weer appel en ook limoen, mooi gebalanceerd met fris zuur en een goed bittertje in de halflange afdronk
In the mouth:
foamy fine fruity onset with again apple and also lime, well-balanced with fresh acid and a good bitter touch in the semilong finish

Conclusie
Cava nieuwe stijl: meer frisfruitig en lichtelijk geparfumeerd met alleen op de achtergrond het bittere van Parellada en Macabeo. Feestwijn. Ook de fles is trendy

CARBO CAVA BRUT PENEDES - España - Penedes

Voor het oog:
bleekgeel met groene flits, fijn parelend
To the eye:
pale yellow with greenish reflection, fine bubbles

Aan de neus:
fijne neus van granny smith appel en citrus, met ook mineralige toets
At the nose:
fine nose of granny smith apple and citrus, with also minerally touch

In de mond:
stevig mousserende frisse aanzet met groene appel en stekelbes onderbouwd door fijne zuren en met een mooie bittertoets in de vrij lange afdronk
In the mouth:
richly foaming fresh onset with green apple and gooseberry, embedded in fine acid and with a nice bitter touch in the fairly long finish

Conclusie
Een fijne Cava met zowel fraicheur als karakter. Heel mooi voor die prijs. En ook nog een plus voor de mooie gesluierde grijstonige fles! Grens B+/A. En zie de prijs.

Conclusion
a refined Cava, both fresh and zesty. Very nice for the small price. And for once: nice "alabasterlike" bottle.

CODORNIU GRAN PLUS ULTRA - España - Penedes

zeer helder citroen- tot goudgeel, heel fijn en lang parelend
To the eye:
very clear lemon-to-gold, very fine bubbles that last quite long

Aan de neus:
breedsporige neus van witte bloemen, brioche, rijpe appelen, ananas, geroosterde amandelen, en een lichte zuurprik
At the nose:
ample nose of white flowers, ripe apples, pineapple, toasted almond and a light acid prick

In de mond:
na rijk mousserende aanzet volgt even breed smaakpatroon met weer rijpe appelen, guave, romig ook en dit alles gedragen door fijne zuren en een mooi bittertje in de lange afdronk
In the mouth:
rich foam at the onset, then also a broad palate of again ripe apples, guave, cream and all this embedded in fine acid and a nice bitter touch in the long finish

Conclusie
Misschien niet Nec plus ultra maar dan zeker mooie cava met alles erop en eraan: rijp fruit, bloemen, amandelen, fijne zuren en een pittig bittertje. Neigt wel naar demi-sec. Zeker een basischammpagne waard tegen die prijs

Conclusion
Maybe not the Nec plus ultra but certainly an impressive cava with all that it needs: ripe fruit, flowers, almonds, fine acid and a zesty bitter touch. Comes close to semi-sweet. Basic champagne quality, at that price.

Aperitief met "lange vingers" koekjes, maar ook alle soorten sfhaaldieren en zelfs paella

Aperitif with crisp cookies, all kinds of crustacea, and even paella

Aan de neus:
een gemengde neus van witte bloemen (kamille), renetappel, ananas en kruiden
At the nose:
a mixed nose of white flowers (camomilla), renet apple, pineapple and spices

In de mond:
een krachtige kruidig-bloemige smaak met ook voldoende fruit; halflange tot lange stevige afdronk
In the mouth:
a powerful spicy-floral palate with also a layer of fruit; semi-long to long zesty finish

Conclusie
nog beter dan in vorige jaren: een heel mooie zowel fruitige als stevig kruidig-bloemige cava, friszurig en met goede lengte. Komt in de buurt van goede basischampagne!

even better than in previous years: a both fruity and spicy-floral cava, freshly acid with fairly long finish

Aan de neus:
elegante aantrekkelijke neus met vooral zomerappel, rijpe gele perzik, broodgist en broodkruimels en een florale toets
At the nose:
elegant attractive nose with especially summer appel, bread crumbs and yeast and a floral touch

In de mond:
rijk mousserende fijnfruitige aanzet (appel en peer), bijna exploderend in de mond met een heel mooie zuur-bitterbalans; lange afdronk met appel in de retro
In the mouth:
richly foaming fine fruity onset (appel and pear), almost exploding on the palate with a very nice sour-bitter balance; long finish with apple in the retronasal phase

Conclusie
De naam verwijst naar een traditionele grote vierkantshoeve, maar deze wijn biedt naast stevigheid ook en vooral verfijnde frisfruitige elegantie. Kan naast heel veel champagnes staan!

The name refers to a tradtional quadrangonal farm, yet the wine has more than solidity: it is fine fruity elegance all over! Does match a lot of champagne with big names

helder frambozenrood, fijn en lang parelend
To the eye:
clear raspberry, fine and long bubbles

Aan de neus:
zachtfruitige neus met framboos, kers en bosaardbei, ook oude rode rozen
At the nose:
mellow fruity nose with raspberry, cherry and wild strawberry, touch of old red roses

In de mond:
sprankelende roodfruitige aanzet met weer framboos en kers, ingebed in fijne zuren en met een licht bittertje in de elegante lange afdronk
In the mouth:
zesty red fruity onset (raspberry, cherry), packed in fine acid and with a light bitter touch in the elegant long finish

Conclusie
Roséschuimwijn zit in de lift, en dit is een mooi voorbeeld van een levendige roodfruitige en toch ook heel frisse rosé cava

Conclusion
Rosé sparkling is up and coming, and this is an example of such a zesty, fine fruity yet also very fresh rosé cava.

In de mond:
frisfruitig goed mousserend met verderop iets meer pittig kruidige smaak en ook dat mineraal toetsje dat we eerder roken; elegante frisfruitige afdronk

fresh fruity foamy onset, with further on a more zestful and lightly spicy taste, plus also the mineral touch we detected on the nose; elegant fresh fruity finish

Conclusie
deze speciale Cava van het bekende massa-productiehuis vertoont een fraicheur en een elegantie samen met pittige kruidigheid die we anders zelden aantreffen. Mooi product

This special Cava of mass-producing Feixenet shows a fine fruity freshness together with a zesty light spiciness which we rarely encounter in their other wines

Mooi Pinotneusje: rode bes, framboos, kers en vers gemaaid hooi
At the nose:
nice Pinot nose: red currant, raspberry, cherry and freshly mawn hay

In de mond:
frisfruitige aanzet met framboos en kersenpit, halflange frisfruitige afdronk met goed bittertje
In the mouth:
fresh fruity onset with raspberry and cherry kernel, semilong fresh fruity finish with nice bitter touch

Conclusie
mooi gemaakte fijnfruitige en toch vrij droge Pinot cava: een ware innovatie voor de streek. Beter dan in vorige jaren!

heel verfrissende aperitiefwijn. Of op zijn Spaans: te drinken bij fruittaart als nagerecht (kriek of framboos!)
