Toegegeven: het is al drie jaar geleden dat we nog "Amerikaans" (en zeg eigenlijk "Californisch") hebben geproefd. Nochtans: met de lage dollar was dit toch interessant? Anderzijds is het zo dat onze toenmalige analyse blijft kloppen: in België, en - op uitzondering van de UK - in heel Europa, is "American wine" absoluut niet "hot". Bij ons heeft bij voorbeeld Colruyt in zijn rekken 0 Amerikaans staan (alleen nog één 'oude' Californiër in Collishop). Een pluim gaat dan naar GB-Carrefour dat kan pronken met de "Gallo family" reeks, en daarnaast nog 3 andere merken aanbiedt. Op korte afstand gevolgd door Delhaize, dat bij voorbeeld uitpakt met Mondavi's Woodbridge.

Redenen voor deze heel beperkte belangstelling? Sommigen zullen zeggen 'anti-amerikaanse gevoelens', anderen 'de instabiliteit van de dollar', nog anderen 'de VSA hebben geen wijn-export beleid' - en van al die dingen is er wel iets waar. Nu Barack Obama aan het bewind komt, waait er misschien ook een andere wijnwind? Wij wilden hem een klein eresaluut brengen met deze proeverij van 2 x 7 Californische wijnen. Als je naar de kaart hierboven kijkt, weet dan dat bijna alle geproefde wijnen uit Sonoma en Nappa komen (dichtbij San Francisco).

Admitted: we have not been tasting regularly American - or, as far as Belgium goes, Californian wines. Our last tasting was in January 2006. Yet, the low dollar should have motivated us otherwise. But then and now, Europe as a whole, and Belgium in particular, does not show any siginificant interest in American wines. The UK is the exception. Look at the supermarkets around here: the greatest one, Colruyt, has no American wine whatsoever in its shelves. The greatest selection is to be found in the GB-Carrefour, which can be proud about its "Gallo family" selection, with 3 more brands. Delhaize is e good second, with Mondavi's Woodbridge Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon as showcase.
Whatever reasons there may be - we wanted to pick up this part of our tradition here, and, take the inauguration of Barack Obama as an incentive. We have therefore tasted 14 "American" wines, and present here our 7 WHITES. And lo and see: ther's great quality for very reasonable prices!
