"Groot Geluk": in een wereldbeker?

Villiera - dat wij ooit in Stellenbosch bezochten - is een top wijnhuis. Eigenaars zijn intussen de Grier drie-generatie familie. Ze zijn niet alleen bekend voor hun Shiraz, Chenin en Riesling (jawel), maar minstens evenzeer ook voor de "Vonkelwijn" die we toen ook al mochten proeven, en die de naam "Brut Natural" droeg. 40% van de productie is trouwens schuimwijn! De naam "Groot Geluk" zal je in het huidige aanbod niet vinden - blijkbaar is dit de naam voorbehouden voor de groot-distributie. Merkwaardig aan deze wijn: het is een blend van 4 druiven: (1) Chardonnay, (2) Pinot meunier, (3) Pinot Noir en (4) Pinotage. Dus een huwelijk tussen Champagne (1-3) en Suid-Afrika! En inderdaad: zij werken samen met een Frans champagnehuis. En het resultaat mag er zijn!.

In het jaar van de wereldcup is de naam symbolisch: laat de wereldbeker vol lopen met vonkelwijn en zowel winnaars als verliezers geluk brengen!

 

"Groot Geluk": happiness in a World Cup?

Villiera, now run by the Grier family, is a top Stellenbosch winery, not only famous for its Shiraz, Chenin and Riesling wines, but even more for its sparkling or "Vonkelwijn" of 5 different types. No SA winery has more sparklings than they do: they amount to 40% of the production.The name of Groot Geluk - Great Happiness does not figure among them. Possible reason: this wine is destined to supermarkets. . The curious thing about this wine is that it is a blend of 4 grapes: (1) Chardonnay, (2) Pinot meunier, (3) Pinot Noir and (4) Pinotage. This means a marriage between Champagne (1-3) and South Africa. And indeed: they work together with a champagne house.

In the year of the FIFA Soccer World Cup, this may be significant: let this sparkling fill the cup, and bring Happiness to the host and all other countries!

Voor het oog:
citroen- tot goudgeel, zeer helder, matig fijn maar sterk en lang parelend
To the eye:
lemon-to-gold, moderate fine but long mounting bubbles, very clear
Aan de neus:
aantrekkelijke neus met wit en geel fruit (zomerappel, gele perzik), snoep en witte bloemen
At the nose:
attractive nose with white and yellow fruit (apple, yellow peach), sweets and white flowers
In de mond:
heel frisfruitige tintelende aanzet met hetzelfde fruit en overgaand naar een mooie friszurige én bittere vrij lange finale.
In the mouth:
titillating fresh fruity onset with the same fruit as smelled before and evolving to a nice bitter-sweet finish
Conclusie
"Fijn Geluk" is allicht een betere naam voor deze "Vonkelwijn": fijnfruitig, fris, charmant, en droog ("brut"). Mooie blend van 4 druiven: Chardonnay, Pinot meunier,Pinot noir,Pinotage. 		  Conclusion
The name says "Great Happiness" but we can rebaptize it as "Fine Luck": fresh and fine fruity sparkling, really dry, quite charming.

Zeker goed als aperitief, eventueel met boudoir koekjes. Ook bij lichte visgerechten

Certainly good as aperitif, eventually with "boudoir" cookies. Als light fish dishes
