Wijn uit Oostenrijk? Dat zijn toch witte wijnen zoals in Duitsland? Jawel, ca 80% van de oostenrijkse wijnproductie is wit. Zie ons artikel daarover.
Toen wij zo'n 40 jaar geleden voor het eerst over de Grossglockner naar het Mölltal trokken kregen wij daar in een "Gaststübl" inderdaad een drank die zij "unser Weisswein" noemden, waarna wij snel op het goede Pilsbier overschakelden. Maar: 9 jaar geleden deden we de Donauroute van Schärding naar Wenen, en op haast elke stopplaats kregen we goede tot uitstekende wijnen voorgeschoteld, en, zelfs goede rode, zoals een "Pinot Noir" (ze gebruiken daar graag de Franse term) of een ZWEIGELT, een inheemse druif die vooral in Burgenland geteeld wordt.
Zo je bij ons al niet zo makkelijk Oostenrijkse witte wijnen vindt, dan geldt dat nog meer voor de rode. En die zijn vaak ook prijziger. Toch hebben we twee pareltjes gevonden. En een Zweigelt die helaas toch wel overjarig was geworden. Zie onze proefnotities hieronder.
AUSTRIAN RED WINES YOU SAID?
Ask a "normal" winde drinker or even a waiter in a "normal" restaurant "Let's have an Austrian wine?" and they may shrug off the request or refer to the "glycol scandal" of 1985. And if they know, then they will refer to "German type white wines like Riesling".
We are longstanding fans of Austria as a country of natural wonders, art cities and hospitable people. Our first visit was in 1967, when we crossed the famous Gross Glockner mountain pass and stayed in the attractive village of Sagritz/Mölltal. We went for lunch to a local "Gaststube" and were offered "our austrian white wine". After one sip, we switched to the far better local Pils beer. BUT: when we biked along the Danube from Germany to Vienna in 2003, we were offered Wachau and Steiermark whites that amazed us and our companions: "We did not expect to get this high quality at all!" See our article about 7 whites. The greatest amazement came when they offered us a fine "Pinot Noir from Vienna" or a "Zweigelt - their local red variety - from Burgenland".
Finding Austrian whites is already quite a task, and all the more so with reds. We tasted two very good reds, plus a Zweigelt from a famous winery which was "over the hill".

Voor het oog: helder kersenrood met lichte evolutie, traant behoorlijk
To the eye: clear cherry with light brownish rim, shows legs

wat gesloten bij aanvang, dan elegante maar breedsporige neus met rode bessen en bessenpit, aardbei, peper, bosgrond en na walsen ook kers en muschelkalk At the nose:
a bit closed at frist, then elegant broad spectred nose with recurrant and currant kernel, strawberry, woodland and - after shaking - cherry plus clear touch of chalk
In de mond:
heel elegante evenwichtige aanzet met licht getoast rood fruit, gedragen door frisse zuren en zijdige tannines, plus ook weer kalkimpressie; zalige elegante afdronk met koffie in de retro In the mouth:
very elegant balanced onset with slightly toasted red fruit, supported by fine acid and silky tannin, plus again touch of chalk; heavenly elegant finish with moccha in the retronasal phase
Conclusie
Dat Duitsland (Pfalz!) schitterende Pinot Noir/Grauburgunder maakt wisten we al, nu komt Oostenrijk erbij: in de stijl van Morey-St. Denis vol elegant rijp rood fruit, fijne zuren, ronde tannines en - ook hier - kalkimpressie.Kan nog 3-4 jaar mee
Conclusion
Austria as a producer of high class Pinot Noir? Yes, this wine has it all: ripe small red fruit, fine acid, mellow tannin and, typical for Neusiedlersee, chalk. Resembles elegant Morey St. Denis of Burgundy. Will last through 2016

Deze wijn, die ooit hoge ogen gooide, is nu over zijn hoogtepunt heen: weinig fruit, wel kruiden en specerijen
