Ruby Portowijnen geproefd: klasse voor kleine prijs

Met Testaankoop proefden we 18 ruby porto wijnen uit de supermarkten - dat is het gehele beschikbare aanbod. We hebben al zo'n 6 keer porto wijnen besproken. Zie ons algemeen artikel op deze link. Van de 8 bestaande types beperkten we ons nu tot het meest jeugdige én fruitige type: Ruby of robijn. Zo'n reeks proeven is eigenlijk een kleine beproeving: steeds maar zoet fruit, en vaak dezelfde geur- en smaakpatronen. Maar toch: we konden er een aantal goed getypeerde én soms duidelijk van elkaar verschillende uitpikken. En dan die prijsjes! Zie hieronder:



9 Ruby Port wines tasted: high quality for small prices.

For the xth time, we have been tasting port wines, together with consumers' magazine Testaankoop. Of the 8 or so different types, this tasting of 18 wines was restricted to the most youthful and fruity type: Ruby. Not easy at all, if you think of a palate that is time and again invaded by sweet dark red fruit! Nevertheless, we were able to distinguish some "simple" ones from the classy ports, one of which even offered chocolate in nose and mouth. See our tasting notes below.

DOUBLE KEYS RUBY SYMINGTON FAMILY - Portugal -

Voor het oog:
diep robijnkleurig, mooie spiegel, wijn kleurt het glas
To the eye:
deep ruby, nice mirror, wine taints the glass
Aan de neus:
opstuivend donkerrood fruit (kers, vlier, rozijntjes) en zoethout
At the nose:
exuberant dark red fruit (cherry, elederberry, riasins) and clearly also licorice
In de mond:
sappige donkerroodfruitige aanzet met weer kers en rozijnen, ingepakt in goed zuur en nog presente maar niet aggressieve tannines; volfruitige en licht kruidige, ietwat uitdrogende finale
In the mouth:
juicy dark fruity onset with again cherry and raisin, packed in fine acid and non-aggressive tannin; full fruity, lightly spicy finish which alsdo dries out a bit (no problem)
Conclusie
De twee sleutels van deze Port zijn het volrijpe donkerrode fruit en de dragende zuur-bittertoets, versmolten tot een beklijvend geheel. En dat tegen zo'n prijs!		   Conclusion

De familie Symington staat voor 38% van alle Portwijn (Graham, Dow, Warre, Vesuvio etc). MAAR: maakt ook heel goede "gewone" ruby en tawny! Symington Family own about 40% of all Port vineyards (Graham,Vesuvio) but also produce top "basic" Port!

Conclusie
De naam Armuro staat gewoonlijk borg voor kwaliteit: ook deze ruby koppelt breedgeschakeerd donkerrood fruit aan frisse zuren en lichte kruiden. En zie de prijs!		   Conclusion

Conclusie
Een ruby met twee gezichten: charmant en volrijp rood fruit enerzijds, en wat kruidige tannines anderzijds. Toch mooi!		   Conclusion
a Ruby with two faces: charming full ripe red fruit on the one hand, spicy good tannin on the other. Zesty!.

Porto waar je best iets bij neemt, zoals studentenhaver of appeltaart of een donkere praline

heel fruitige neus van gedroogde kers en pruim en donkere rozijntjes, maar ook bosgrond en verderop wat kruidigheid
At the nose:
quite fruity onset with freid red cherry, plums and raisins, plus also woodland and further on even spices
In de mond:
diepfruitige mondvullende aanzet met gedroogde rode vruchten en wat chocolade, in goede balans met frisse zuren en een licht bittertje in de lange volfruitige afdronk
In the mouth:
deep fruity mouth filling onset with dried red fruit and some chocolate, in good balance with fresh acid and a light bitter touch in the long full fruity finish
Conclusie
Een uitbundig volfruitige Ruby: rijpe charme te koop! Onvoorstelbaar voor die prijs		   Conclusion

FARIA PORTO RUBY SYMINGTON FAMILY - Portugal - Porto

In de mond:
verrassend frisfruitige aanzet met mollig midden en een mooie bittertoets in de eerder korte afdronk
In the mouth:
suprisingly fresh fruity onset with mellos mid-palate and a nice bitter touch in the rather short finish
Conclusie
Mooi vineuze Ruby met volrijp fris fruit en een mooi bittertje, wel een beetje kort van afdronk. Grens B+/A		   Conclusion
Appealing vinous Ruby port with full ripe fresh fruit, yet a bit short on the finish

Sommige Ruby portwijnen vertonen veel gelijkenis met rijpe Douro rode wijnen - en dat is hier duidelijk het geval. Some Ruby Port wines show a clear affinity with ripe red Douro wines - which is the case here

rather closed at first, then ripe sour cherry, black- and blueberry, spices and red raisins
In de mond:
mooi diepfruitig aanzettend met rijpe rozijntjes en kers, ingebed in frisse zuren en met een licht bittere graniettoon in de vrij lange aangename afdronk
In the mouth:
nice deep druity onset with ripe raisins and cherry, embedded in fresh acid and with a touch of light bitter granite soil in the fairly long finish
Conclusie
Een mooie Ruby met veel fris donkerrood fruit, goede zuren en lichte kruidigheid - heel elegant. Grens A/A+. En zie de prijs!		   Conclusion
A nice Ruby with all the ingredients: ripe dark red fruit, good acid, light spiciness - very elegant. And all that for this price!

Daar waar Porto 10-15 jaar geleden al te vaak een versleten oxydatieve indruk gaf, is sinds '95 grote vooruitgang geboekt - ook in het basisgamma! Whereas Port wine was up until 1995 often worn out and oxydative, this ruby shows the progress made!

fresh fruity onset with ripe delicate red fruit on top of the fresh acid; elegant deep fruity finish with a nice light bitter touch

Een charme-offensief van diep maar fris rijp rood fruit!		   Conclusion
San Telmo offers a compact fruity charm offensive: fresh and elegant

Zeker goed als aperitief, of, waarom niet, bij chocomousse of chocoladetaart (zoals wij deden)

Conclusie

remarkable "vinous" or "winy" nose with discrete small red fruit (cherry, berries, plums) plus licorice, small red raisins and a spicy touch
In de mond:
even rijk smaakpatroon met rijp maar tegelijk fris rood fruit (kers, vlier) gedragen door goede zuren en lichte tannines; lange zalige frisfruitige afdronk
In the mouth:
equally wealthy palate with ripe yet also fresh small red fruit (cherry, elederberry) supported by good acid and light tannin; long heavenly finish
Conclusie
Taylor is een grote naam, en bevestigt ook in deze prachtige ruby zijn faam: in goede zuren en lichte tannines ingebonden rijp rood fruit. Topklasse!		   Conclusion
Taylor is a big name, which is entirely confirmed in this "basic" yet splendid ruby: good acid and light tannin cloak delicate ripe red fruit. Top class!
