VIÑAS DEL VERO: WAAR of NIET?
Toen we onlangs zegden dat één van onze mooiste recente ontdekkingen de Chardonnay van Viñas (uitspr.: Vinjas) del Vero was, zei onze gesprekspartner: de naam zegt dus ook de waarheid!
Mooie pun, maar zo is het niet. De Vero is namelijk een riviertje dat, in het gebied van de Somontano door het dorpje Barbastro loopt. De naam betekent dus: "wijngaarden aan de Verorivier". En Somontano staat voor "aan de voet van de berg", zijnde de Pyreneeën. We hebben de wijnen zo'n twaalf jaar geleden ontdekt bij het toenmalige Terclavers in Leuven - intussen opgekocht en ingeslokt door Inbev. Van meetaf stonden we verbaasd over de kwaliteit.
Viñas del Vero en Somontano vormen samen een dubbel succesverhaal. In het zongedroogde, tegen koude winden beschermde heuvelgebied rondom de rivier wordt hier een staalkaart van Spaanse én Europese witte en blauwe/rode druiven verbouwd, tot een 'buitenbeentje' als gewürztraminer aan toe.
In dit gebied werden al eeuwen druiven verbouwd, maar de "Denominación Somontano" kwam er pas in 1983. En in de tweede helft van de jaren '80 kwamen "de drie groten" zich hier vestigen: Viñas del Vero (1986), Enate (1988) en Bodegas Pirineos (1993). Viñas del Vero produceert in een hypermoderne bodega een grote verscheidenheid aan smaken en stijlen, met zowel cépagewijnen – gemaakt van een enkel druivenras – als assemblages.
Viñas del Vero brengt zijn wijnen op vier prijs- en kwaliteitsniveaus uit: Vinos Jovénes, Vinos Varietales, Vinos de Colección en Vinos de Autor. In de eerste categorie van jonge wijnen vallen de vlot drinkende jongfruitige rode, witte en rosé-wijnen.
De Varietales vormen de ruggengraat van het aanbod., terwijl Colección of de "eigen selectie" staat voor op eik gekweekte wijnen met extra diepte en complexiteit. De Vinos de Autor zijn "el tope de la bodega": uit grote jaren voortkomende en in beperkte hoeveelheden geproduceerde klassewijnen, die meteen ook vrij prijzig zijn. Een voorbeeld: de chardonnay Gran Vos. In onze ervaring echter is die niet veel beter dan de "varietales" versie.
Some time ago, we told a tasting buddy that one of ourgreat recent detections was "Chardonnay varietal Viñas del Vero (pron. Vinyas) from Somontano". She replied: Hey, that name stands for the "truth" then?" I said: "Nice pun, but the truth is that Vero is the river that runs through the vineyards". And Somontano means "foothills".
We discovered the wines some twelve years ago, and were amazed at the quality, especially of the basic range.
Somontano, a region where vines were planted several centuries ago, only recently got its "D.O ." status, notably in 1983, after a long struggle by local winemakers. The true status of great wine region was only earned when "the big three", namely Viñas del Vero (1986), Enate (1988) and Bodega Pirineos (1993) started their operations and mass production. Viñas del Vero may well have earned the greatest reputation, with its four types: of production lines: Vinos Jovénes, Vinos Varietales, Vinos de Colección and Vinos de Autor.
The name "Jovenes" says it all: young, fruity, fresh wines to be enjoyed within a year. Backbone of the offerings are the Varietales, wines with depth, concentration and a broad palate. The Vinos de Colección are not so much "collector's items", yet they are wines with great depth,character and, above all, ageing potential (3-6 years). Finally we get the Vinos de Autor, coming from great vintages, oak-elevated and highly concentrated top class wines. One example: "Gran Vos", the top chardonnay. However, in our experience, that wine was in some years not better than the"varietal" chardonnay

To the eye: dark purplish ruby, shiny mirror, quite viscous
Aan de neus:
bloemig-kruidige neus met vegetale toetsen (thijm, viooltjes) en verderop heel wat rijp donkerrood bosfruit (braam- bosbes) At the nose:
floral-spicy nose with vegetal impressions (thyme and violets), complemented with lots of mellow ripe dark red fruit from the woods (black- and blueberry)
In de mond:
van meetaf krachtig en diep soorsmakend: het floraal-kruidige van de Grenache ingepakt in donkerrood fruit; lange diepfruitige en kruidige afdronk In the mouth:
equally wealthy palate: the smooth floral spiciness of Grenache embedded in dark ripe red fruit; lively long deep fruity finish
Conclusie
Garnachawijn van het uitgebalanceerde fijnfruitige en floraal-kruidige type, deels afkomstig van zeer oude Garnachastokken. In feite de tweede wijn van de "Secastilla" reeks. Grens A/A+. Wel prijzig

diepfruitige aanzet met donkerrood (bos)fruit ingetoomd door fijne zuren en aangevuld met een aangename kruidige toets in de lange afdronk In the mouth:
deepfruity onset with adark red berry fruit on a bed tamed by refined acid and complemented with a nice spicy touch in the long finish
Conclusie
Zoals voorheen draagt deze wijn het Vvero-karakter: rijp donkerrood fruit, frisse zuren, doorsmakende kruidigheid en niet zoeterig. Dit is de Spaanse "rosado" traditie. En dan die prijs!

Bears the imprint of the house: full fruity, fresh and not overly sweet at all, as in the true Spanish "rosado" tradition. And see the price!

één en al kracht in de mond, gebundeld met al wat de neus reeds als belofte inhield, en daarbij een massa edele tannines en zeer verfrissende zuren; heel lange mooi geintegreerde afdronk. In the mouth:
ots of power in the mouth, inegrating all what the nose lets you expect, and embedded in solid tannins and very fresh acidity; impressive well-integrated finish
Conclusie
Zoals voor de 2000 die we eerder proefden: een monumentale wijn van neus tot aan de afdronk zonder einde. Kan nog 6-7 jaar mee. Redelijk geprijsd. - Guía Oro de los Vinos de España 2008 Medalla de Oro

een mooi gevulde neus met duidelijk de ingrediënten van Chardonnay: boter, amandelnoot, ananas, rijpe peer, citrus, met ook een duidelijke minerale toets en vanille At the nose:
an opulent nose with most of the well-known ingredients of chardonnay: cream, almond nuts, pineapple, ripe pear, citrus, but also clear mineral touch plus vanilla
In de mond:
romige en rijpfruitige aanzet (ananas, peer), goede vulling met nootjes en romigheid en voldoende frisse zuren; een elegante doorsmakende diepfruitige afdronk met mineralen in de retro In the mouth:
creamy and fruity onset (pineapple, pear), fairly concentrated with nuts and cream and enough acid to keep the balance; well-integrated long fine fruity finish, with minerals in the retronasal phase
Conclusie
Zoals in vorige jaren: volfruitig, romig, en tegelijk voor ons voldoende fris en mineralig. Sommigen zullen hem allicht iets te fruitig-romig vinden. Grens A+/AA

as in previous years: deep fruity, creamy and at the same time revealing fresh acid to tame its opulence; some may find the wine too fruity-creamy

Conclusie
Een heel mooie blend, die ons terugvoert naar sommige wijnen uit de zuidelijke Rhône (Le Plan, Brusset): naast het weelderige donkerrode fruit krijg je goede zuren en stevige tannines. Zeker decanteren. Veel waar voor de prijs. Grens A/A+

A well-made impressive blend, making us think of southern Rhône wines (Le Plan, Brusset): next to the wealthy dark red fruit one gets lots of fine acid and solid tannin. Decant!. Very good price-quality relationship. Limit A/A+
