STELLAR PINOTAGE 2008 - South Africa -
2008
Voor het oog:
donker kersenrood met paarse tonen, behoorlijk geconcentreerd
To the eye:
dark cherry with purplish rim, moderately concentrated
Aan de neus:
eerst wat gesloten, dan gestoofd donkerrood fruit (braam-, bosbes, kers), leder, kruiden, bosgrond en wat getoaste eik
At the nose:
closed at first, then stewed dark red fruit (black- and blueberry, cherry), leather, spices, woodland and touch of toasted oak
In de mond:
een naar frambozen en kersen smakende wijn met tegelijk een mooie kruidigheid; tevens frisse zuren en voldoende tannine om het geheel mooi af te ronden
In the mouth:
a palate carrying lots of raspberry and cherry, intertwained with light spices; at the same time good acid and enough tannin to round off the wine beautifully
Conclusie
Pinotage wordt vaak aanzien als "te krachtige vlezige wijn", maar dit is anders: een fijne rijpfruitige en licht kruidige Pinotage met een zonnig karakter. In de lijn van wat we in vorige jaargangen proefden		   Conclusion
Pinotage, unique to South Africa yet less heavy than usual : fine ripe red fruit and light spices - a sunny wine!

gebald donker robijnrood, stevig tranend, de wijn kleurt het glas
To the eye:
quite concentrated dark ruby, thick legs, the wine taints the glass

breed gamma aan geuren: donkere kers, pruim, vlier, koffie, vanille (eik), peper, rijpe ham - ook alcohol (14,8 %!)
At the nose:
a braod gamut of flavours: dark cherry, plums, elderberry, pepper, coffee, vanilla (oak), ripe ham - also alcohol (14,8%!)
In de mond:
doorsmakende rijpfruitige aanzet met weer kers, pruim en braambes, kruidig ook, in toom gehouden door goede zuren en stevige maar niet aggressieve tannines; lange donkerfruitige en kruiige afdronk
In the mouth:
thorougbred wine with lots of ripe dark red fruit, spices, tamed by good acid and tasty tannin; long deep fruity and spicy finish
Conclusie
De naam "Inkspot" zegt het al: bijna inktzwarte wijn, sappig maar tegelijk een krachtpatser met veel donkerrood fruit, kruiden, zuren en tannines; best decanteren		   Conclusion
The name "Inkspot" says it all: nearly black ink colour for a juicy blockbuster with dark ripe red fruit, spices, good acid and tannin; decant!

een naar donkere bessen en kersen smakende wijn met tegelijk een mooie kruidigheid ingepakt in fijn zuur en stevige maar niet-aggressieve tannine om het geheel mooi af te ronden

Conclusie
Een Shiraz met zowel dipefruitig als kruidig karakter, getemd door goed zuur en voldoende tannines. Grens A/A+		   Conclusion

veel klein donkerrood fruit (braambes, donkere kers, pruim) met ook peper en bosgrond

lots of small dark red fruit (blackberry, dark cherry, plums), pepper and woodland
In de mond:
even rijke smaakaanzet met rijp donkerrood fruit op een laagje kruiden en met voldoende zuren om het geheel in evenwicht te houden; vrij lange fruitig-kruidige adronk
In the mouth:
equally wealthy onset with dark red fruit on a bed of spices and with enough acid to keep the whole in balance; fairly long fruity-spicy finish
Conclusie
Onbekend, onbemind? Deze "winery" is niet bekend, maar levert hier met deze Cabernet Sauvignon een mooie geloofsbrief af: veel rijp fruit, lichtjes gekruid en fris. En zie die prijs!		   Conclusion
Unknown, hence unwanted? This "winery" is not known, yet presents itself as quality Cabernet Sauvignon maker: lots of ripe dark red fruit, light spices and good acid.

Een echte steakwijn, zeker ook goed bij gegrild gevogelte met kampernoelies en halfharde romige kazen

KANONKOP KADETTE RED BLEND 2008 - South Africa -

Voor het oog:
diep kersen- tot robijnrood, mooie spiegel, traant behoorlijk
To the eye:
clear but concentrated cherry-to-ruby, nice mirror, shows legs
Aan de neus:
mooi gevarieerd geurenpalet: kers, donkere bes, mokka, peper, vanille, zoethout
At the nose:
nice varied aromatic pattern: cherry, dark berries, moccha, pepper, vanilla, licorice
In de mond:
aangename volrijpe mondaanzet met weer kers maar ook pruim en braam, kruiden, vanille en een rokerige toets; zijdige tannines in de vrij lange rijpfruitige en toch frisse finale
In the mouth:
pleasant mouthfilling onset with again cherry and also plums, spices, vanilla and a light smoky touch; silky tannin in the fairly long ripe fruity yet also fresh finish
Conclusie
En "huis van vertrouwen" dat ook met deze jaargang van de fameuze blend Kanonkop hoge ogen gooit. Goede prijs-kwaliteitsverhouding. Grens A/A+		   Conclusion

THANDI SHIRAZ CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2007 - South Africa - Weskaap

well-concentrated ruby, still young colour
Aan de neus:
suave neus met donkerrood fruit (bos- en braambes), peper, bosgrond en licht getoast
At the nose:
suave nose with dark red fruit (blue- and blackberry), pepper, woodland, touch of toast
In de mond:
even zachtfruitige smaakaanzet (weer bosfruit) met goede zuren en voldoende tannines om het geheel mooi af te ronden; vrij lange zachtfruitige afdronk
In the mouth:
equally smooth mellow fruity onset (again fruit from the woods) with good acid and enough silky tannin to round off the whole; fairly long silky fruity finish
Conclusie
een aangename zachtfruitige en toch voldoende stevige wijn die nu op volle rijpheid is; mooi werk van de Thandi coöperatieve		   Conclusion
smooth juicy blend, yet with enough power to impress the palate; has reached maturity now
Drink bij:
we hadden hem eerst bij kruidige bloedworst met appelmoes en nieuwe aardappelen: heel goed. Vervolgens bij Comtékaas, en ook daar vulde hij de romigheid aan met goed zuur en tannine
Drink with:
we had it first with white and dark sausages, apple compote and new potatoes: quite good. Then also with Comté cheese (semihard), and that too came out well, as the wine added acid and tannin to the creaminess of the cheese

heel fruitige neus met vooral kers en een lichte zuurprik

quite fruity nose with especially cherry, pleasant acid prick
In de mond:
sappige fijnfruitige aanzet met weer veel kers, ingebed in fijne dragende zuren en zachte tannines; goede fijfruitige lengte
In the mouth:
juicy fine fruity with again lots of cherry, packed in fine acid and silky tannin; good finefruity length
Conclusie
De naam spreekt van "genadeberg", en deze wijn is gratievol met kers van neus tot afdronk, toch ook voldoende krachtig met goede zuren en aangename lengte. Verrassend voor een Cabernet Sauvignon		   Conclusion
"Mount Grace" shows its fruity grace through this Cabernet with surprisingly much cherry from nose to finish. Supple yet solid
