Belgian winemakers in France:

1. A qualitative trio: De Groote, Deschepper, Thienpont, Van Duyse :

In Frankrijk werken zowat 20 Belgen - waarvan 3/4 Vlamingen - op hun eigen verworven wijngoed, al of niet in samenwerking met Franse oenologen. Er is al flink wat over hen geschreven (zie onderaan), maar thematische proeverijen van hun wijnen bij ons zijn eerder zeldzaam. Als je vraagt "ken je Belgische wijnmakers in Frankrijk?" dan zal de doorsnee wijnkenner zeggen: de familie Thienpont in Bordeaux. Zij beheren Vieux Certan, Labégorce Zédé en - beroemd en duur - Le Pin. Wie al beter thuis is in deze materie zal verwijzen naar twee champagne-eigenaars: Carole Duval-Nilens (Duval-Leroy) en vooral Paul-François Vranken van het huidige imperium Vranken-Pommery Monopole. Wij zullen het een andere keer over beide huizen hebben, n.a.v. een champagnereis. Maar er zijn nog flink wat anderen. En zoals we zullen zien, ook zij lonen meer dan de moeite. There is a lot of talk about Australian, German, Spanish winemakers in France. Internationally, barely anything is said about Belgian winemakers in France. Except, of course, for the Thienpont family with Labégorce Zédé in Margaux or Le Pin in Pomerol. Those who are better informed, may point to two champagne houses and their (Belgian) owners: Carole Duval-Nilens of Duval-Leroy, and especially Paul-François Vranken who built an empire now called Vranken-Pommery-Monopole. We will come back to these two later, on the occasion of a visit to the champagne region in November. In Belgium itself, little is said about a group of about 25 prominent (Flemish-) Belgian winemakers in the southern neigbouring country (indeed, 3/4 of them are Flemings). Now, under the impulse of Herman Vermoesen of Londerzeel (www.sommmelier.be) an organization "Belgian winemakers in France" has been set up, with a website and an online buying service (www.belgischewijnbouwers.be).

The most famous chateau owned by a Belgian is without any doubt Chateau Le Pin, where Luc Thienpont is the owner-manager. To give an example: the 1998 got 99 points in Parker, and the price one pays for a bottle is now around $ 1559! This man below, could become sedentary now, but Luc Thienpont is said to have sold Chateau Labégorce, and seems to be looking to other continents for new adventures:

The Thienpont adventure started about 80 years ago, when father Marcel Thienpont bought Château Vieux Certan in Pomerol, and revived it in such a way that it became one of the top 10 Pomerol chateaus. That winery is now run by son Alexandre:

1. Pierre DEGROOTE

Deze landbouwingenieur uit Nivelles heeft zich zo'n 15 jaaar geleden gevestigd in het Franse Zuiden (Pays d'Oc) waar hij, samen met een Franse wijnboer, het Domaine Virginie (genoemd naar één van zijn kinderen) oprichtte: 300 ha wijngaard, met een bekend geworden reeks van monocépages, die groot succes kenden. Na tien jaar kon hij het wijngoed voor veel geld verkopen, en kocht hij o.m. wijngoederen in Marokko. Tegelijk behield hij in Nissan-la-Sizerunne een wijngaard van ongeveer 47 ha, voor de helft rood en voor de helft wit. Hiervan proefden wij de Chardonnay en de Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

1. Pierre DEGROOTE

Here comes an agricultural engineer, born in Nivelles, who founded, about 15 years ago, together with a French winemaker, the Domaine Virginie. That name came simply from his youngest daughter. It was a huge winery (300 ha), that became famous for its southern monocépages of nearly all the grapes from the Languedoc. After a succesful decade, he sold the larger part of the winery (with its original name) - for very good money - and then looked for and bought wineries in Morocco (Princesse Elissa is a very good rosé and red wine from there). At the same time he kept about 47 ha of vines in the southern town of Nissan-la-Sizerunne.

The name given to the winery sounds familiar: it now is called "Virginie La Grange" or Virginie's barn.

We present here the Chardonnay and the Cabernet Sauvignon 2002.

2. Koen VAN DUYSE

"DOMAINE de la SERRE" is gelegen in
Saint-Thibéry, op zowat 20 kilometer landinwaarts van het toeristische Cap d'Agde aan de Middellandse Zee.

Domaine de la Serre werd opgericht in 1889 en was oorspronkelijk wel 180 hectare groot. KOEN VAN DUYSE kocht het domein in 1993. Het domein beslaat nu 58 hectare. Hij verbouwt er zowel wit, rosé als rood. Wij proefden drie wijnen:

Van Duyse went to the Languedoc in 1990 and bought what remained of a once very large winery "La SERRE". It is situated close to the Cap d'Agde -south of Carcassonne.

3. Jacques DESCHEPPER

Van alle uit België afkomstige wijnbouwers heeft Jacques Deschepper uit Gent het grootste wijnareaal, want hij bezit een 5-tal kastelen in de regio Brodeaux, waaronder het bekende Tour Baladoz, St. Emilion Grand Cru. Wij konden thans alleen de wijn van Chateau Tayet proeven - maar zelfs deze "gewone" Bordeaux supérieur laat zien welk wijnbouwerstalent hier achter schuilgaat.

3. Jacques DESCHEPPER

Of all Belgian winemakers working in France, Jacques Deschepper from Gent is not only the oldest but also the owner of the largest set of domains. Among them: the well-known Tour Baladoz, a Grand Cru St. Emilion. We could taste his "generic" Bordeaux Supérieur from Chateau Tayet - and that brings ample proof of his winemaking talent.

4. Luc THIENPONT

We kunnen gerust van de "wijnmakersdynastie Thienpont" spreken, waarbij Luc Thienpont wellicht als de kroonprins kan worden bestempeld: gedreven bijna rusteloos zoekend naar progressie, een man van zowel de wijngaard als de hooogtechnologische wijnkelder. Labégorce Zédé is het ouderlijke wijngoed in Margaux, waarbij men wel wat ver gaat in het gebruik van de naam. Er is niet alleen een tweede wijn, maar ook een "Z de Zédé" die eigenlijk een Bordeuax Supérieur is. Vandaar ook het verschil tussen de topwijn en de, zullen we maar zeggen, "derde" wijn.

4. Luc THIENPONT

In the Thienpont case, we can speak of a dynasty. Several of father Marcel's children have gone into the wine business. Luc Thienpont is the "crown prince", a winemaker with a strong drive, always looking for progress and renovation. Labégorce Zédé is the old family winery in Margaux. Yet, they go far in using that name: there is not only a first and a second wine, but also - if you want - a "third": Z de Zédé - in fact a Bordeaux Supérieur. Hence the difference in quality.
