DRUIVENPLUK 2003: EEN ZONNEBAD
|
|

The meteo was right: the third week of September would be sunny, dry and warm. On Sept. 15 we measured between 18 and 21 ° on the refractometer - meaning a potential of 10,6 up to 12 ° Alcohol! The decision was taken: Wednesday 17 is harvest time! 4 men and 1 woman (Angela indeed) set out to cut grapes. We started with white grapes: Müller-Thurgau, Phoenix, Sirius, Ortega and Optima. Ripeness all over the place, yet also some rotten grapes to be removed. But look at the result to the left!
After two hours, the white work was done, and we sat down to relax. You can see the "workers of the first hour" sipping a Leuven Stella beer, telling jokes, and after that even singing..
Then came the red grapes:
Joffre (small, but red juice), Dornfelder (thick, juicy) and - this time
especially ripe - the Early Loon (derived from Pinot Noir). The picture
above shows Joffre. Around One fifteen (the 13th hour), we were happy to
finish under a leaden sun and 28° Celsius. The two winemakers - young Wim
and grey Walter - were happy when they could look at the results. We then sat down for
lunch - well-adapted by Angela: bread, cheese and wine (Terra Andina,
cabernet Sauvignon 1997, AA). The next steps were technical: destemming (with an Italian machine) and - gentle - pressing of part of the grapes. We then added yeast, and by the evening, everything was in the works. Never before did things look so good.
